Il Giro Di Pembrokeshire

The Charity Bike Ride organised by

The Rotary Club of Narberth & Whitland

Sunday 5 September 2021

PLEASE NOTE THAT ONLINE REGISTRATION HAS NOW CLOSED
You can still turn up tomorrow –  5 September – but please be prepared to pay cash for your entry

We are pleased to advise that our Rotary Charity Bike Ride is going ahead this year, so don’t let all your solo summer rides go to waste.  This classic Autumn Sportif is now established as the tough end of season ride.

Similar to last year we have had to make some changes, which has included reducing the number of routes available to 30 and 60 miles.  There is also a change in the Finish venue, which is now near the start in Narberth at the Narberth RFC Ground.

Narberth & Whitland Rotary – Charity Bike Ride

Il Giro Di Pembrokeshire

Sunday 5 September 2021

Introduction

We like to describe the Il Giro Di Pembrokeshire as a challenging ride. But it is NOT brutal, just tough! This year we have revised the routes, so you enjoy a wider range of countryside and will as last year, finish at Narberth RFC ground. The chef and kitchen staff have kindly offered to prepare a special two course meal for only £10.00. All participants who wish to have a meal must book in advance. Simply add your food order when entering the event. You may also book extra meals for family and friends. The Main Course is Homemade Beef or Vegetarian Lasagne, served with fresh leaf dressed salad, garlic bread and chips. The desert is Homemade Fresh Fruit Trifle served with Cream.

Entry Fees are again very modest, based on age of participant and range from £5.00 for 12 and under, £10 for 13 to 17 and £15.00 for 18 and over. You may enter for just 50p if you agree to raise minimum sponsorship. Details are given in the Event Guidance Notes.

Should you have any special dietary requirements, please email the event organiser David Haward at: –

Covid Restrictions

Please note the event is subject Covid Restrictions, which may be updated prior to the event. This may restrict the way we run the event or in the extreme case have to post-pone the event. Any changes will be notified to you by email. However, we recommend you to check our website too for updates.

The Routes

The two routes on offer this year are approximately 30 and 60 miles long. Both contain short cuts, should you find the ride too much for you on the day. More detail is given after the route descriptions. The start and Registration are at Bloomfield House Community Centre, Redstone Road Narberth SA67 7ES. Parking is available in the top Car Park. Please do not use the lower car parks, they are required for the less mobile centre users. Registration opens a minimum of 30 minutes before the ride leaves. See below for departure times. Please come earlier, to avoid a crush

30 Mile Route

This is a challenging course, but with no major climbs. You will have some, but they are either steep but short, or long but gentle and they are broken up so you get a chance to recover between them. The total 2,766 feet of climbing sounds worse than it is, but you will need to be moderately cycle fit to enjoy the ride. You will be rewarded with some beautiful descents and stunning countryside with a wide variety of terrain from almost sea level at Cresswell Quay to the foothills of the Preselli Hills when you get to Maenclochog. Generally being on minor roads you will have little traffic to deal with. But please remember you are on a public road, so stay alert.  The 30 mile Ride Starts at 10:30.

60 Mile Route

This is a tough course with some serious hills to challenge both your physical and mental preparation. You should only enter if you are a regular cyclist, doing at least 40 miles a week. However, you will be rewarded with some very impressive countryside varying from picturesque rolling farmland, stunning views from the Preselli Hills, as well as waterside sections contrasting with tree lined lanes and wooded sections all on relatively quite roads. But please remember you are on a public road, so stay alert. It is a ride you will remember long after you have forgotten 5,646 feet of climbing! The 60 mile Ride Starts at 9:00.

Rider Fitness

Not sure if you’re fit enough? Or simply concerned you may not make it to the end. Don’t worry!

We all have off days, so in addition to the SAG Wagon for those that need to retire, we have a number of short cuts which are described in the Cue Sheets. So, if you are feeling tired use a short cut, but please text the organisers so we know where you are. In addition, you are free to change your distance on the day. Just advise the organisers when signing on. Cue Sheets and Maps will be available to download nearer to the event date. The routes will be signed, but you should take time to study them on a map. Signs can get moved by the wind or lost altogether!

PLEASE ENSURE EACH RIDER COMPLETES A SEPARATE REGISTRATION.

Entry Fees remain the same as last year and remember you can enter for as little as £0.50, if you agree to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship monies for British Heart Foundation and other charitable causes supported by Rotary.  Sponsorship Form can be downloaded below

Please assemble to CHECK IN and collect your BREVET at the Bloomfield Community Centre. NO parking will be available at the Rugby Club site. The Ride will start from the Bloomfield Community Centre exit gate which is a short ride/walk from the Rugby Club along a footpath.

A bar will be available at the Rugby Ground at the finish and Narberth Rugby Club are organising food (as mentioned above) to be available there after the ride. There will a large outdoor marquee on site.
